Bringing the Otis Smith House Back to Life

The Historical Society’s latest project brings the Otis Smith House replica back to life. Once faded and indistinct, the replica now brings the house’s story into focus—highlighting its 1873 Second Empire origins, the early-1900s Colonial Revival addition, and period-appropriate details.

The Rockfall section of Middlefield developed as a classic New England Mill Village, with workers’ homes and boarding houses clustered around the factory that sustained local life. Within this setting, Otis Smith built his family residence on Main Street, creating a prominent home that reflected both prosperity and architectural ambition.
